Fruits & Vegetables of Israel

Israel is a major exporter of fresh fruit and vegetables, being a world leader in agricultural technologies. Israel exports more than $2 billion worth of produce, developing each year more varieties of nutritious, flavoursome, organic fruits and vegetables from kibbutzim and moshavim, with citrus fruits being it's third largest export.

Innovative Israeli bred fruits and vegetables include the 'Pomelit' a nutritious hybrid of the grapefruit and pomelo, yet sweeter, smaller and easier to peel and still containing the anti oxidant properties of both. The 'Black Galaxy' tomato was introduced to international markets, derived from a pigment of blueberries, making it look very exotic and containing high levels of Vitamin C.

The pattern of rain in Israel makes a big difference between summer and winter produce, often making the winter fruits have much more flavour. Strawberries are a winter fruit in Israel, finishing the season around March or early April and pomegranates are at their best in time for Rosh Hashana.

Most of the wonderful produce of Israel are found daily in the markets of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and all over the country, where locals, chefs and restaurateurs buy their fruit and vegetables for all of Israel's home and commercial cooking.
